For the majority of vehicles over 3 years old an MOT test is a legal requirement, for private passenger vehicles, taxis and ambulances it is over 1 year old. An MOT test makes sure that your motor vehicle fulfils the minimum standard of roadworthiness which keeps you, your passengers and other vehicle drivers safe.

No Re-test Charges

In the event that your vehicle fails its MOT with us, we will quote you the price to get it through. Should you opt for us to do the repairs then we’ll not charge you a re-test fee. If you opt to have your vehicle fixed somewhere else and return for your re-test within 10 working days then a ₤10 re-test fee will be charged. If you come back after the 10 working days then the full MOT price will be charged.

The quote is without obligation and you are free to take your car elsewhere for the repair work if you would prefer, as mentioned previously repairs that have been done someplace else will incur a ₤10 MOT re-test fee and need to be brought back for re-testing inside of 10 working days.

Notification And Reminders

When your MOT test is complete, fail or pass, we will call, email or text you immediately to tell you the outcome. Our team could also send you a complimentary courtesy reminder via email or text about a month before your MOT is due to expire next year if you would like us to.

MOT Test Changes – May 2018

On the 20th May 2018, the way that faults are classified on your MOT test is changing. The current fault system of ‘advisory’ is going to be replaced. After the 20th of May any faults found during the MOT will be classified as either a Minor, Major or Dangerous fault.

If your car has any faults that have been identified as either Major or Dangerous will result in you vehicle failing the MOT Test immediately.

What Is Checked In An MOT Test?

The first thing that is checked on your MOT test is that the Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN. The VIN is a unique code including a serial number which identifies your vehicle and it is stamped on your vehicle when it is manufactured. Where the VIN is located varies from one vehicle manufacturer to the next. The tester will look to ensure that the VIN is both present on your vehicle and legibly displayed.

The condition, security, legibility and the format of letters and numbers on your registration plate are checked by the MOT Tester. All the lettering and spacing on both your number plates must meet the current number plate regulations. if they have been altered in any way it could result in a fail.

Your vehicle headlamps are checked to ensure their aim is correct then the condition, colour, security and operation of the lights on your vehicle are checked.

The condition and  operation of your steering and suspension components is correct.

Your vehicle’s windscreen wipers and washers are checked to ensure that they operate correctly and give you, the driver, a clear view of the road ahead.

MOT Wakefield Frequently Asked Questions

The MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. You must get an MOT for your vehicle by either:

  • the third anniversary of its registration
  • the anniversary of its last MOT, if it’s over 3 years old
  • Some vehicles need to be tested at one year old, such as Ambulances, Taxis, or Private Passenger Vehicles with more than 8 seats.

Please note, you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT.

An MOT lasts for a year. The date it runs out is printed on the last pass certificate. You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date.

You can’t drive your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out. You can be prosecuted if caught.

The only exceptions are to drive it:

  • to or from somewhere to be repaired
  • to a pre-arranged MOT test

During the MOT, important parts on your vehicle will be checked to make sure they meet the legal standards.

You can watch the test from a viewing area but you’re not allowed to interrupt the tester.

The test does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.

Your vehicle can either pass or fail the MOT. If it fails, you’ll get a list of things that need to be fixed.

Passing the MOT

If your vehicle passes the MOT:

  • you’ll get an MOT certificate from the test centre
  • it will be recorded in the MOT database

Mileage reading

The MOT certificate will show the mileage recorded at the current and previous 3 test passes. This is shown as the ‘odometer reading and history’.

Report any mistakes with the latest reading to the MOT centre within 7 days. They will give you a replacement certificate.

Mistakes on an earlier mileage can’t be changed.

Failing the MOT

If your vehicle fails the MOT:

  • you’ll get a ‘refusal of an MOT test certificate’ from the test centre
  • it will be recorded in the MOT database

You can appeal the result if you think it’s wrong.

Driving a vehicle that’s failed

You must not drive the vehicle on the road if it fails the test, even if the MOT hasn’t run out, except to:

  • have the failed defects fixed
  • a pre-arranged MOT test appointment

You can be fined up to £2,500, be banned from driving and get 3 penalty points for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

You don’t need to get an MOT for a vehicle that hasn’t reached the age its first MOT is needed.

Exempt vehicles

Other vehicles that don’t need an MOT include:

  • cars and motorcycles made before 1960
  • goods vehicles powered by electricity
  • tractors

A list of exempt types of vehicles is on form V112. You need to fill in the form if your vehicle is listed so that you can tax it.
